It was a JOKE!

Bloganuary 2024 Day 2 Prompt Do you play in your daily life? What says play to you?

Well? do you?” the doctor leans forward, her leather chair squeaking slightly.

Do I what?” came the distracted reply. Big brown eyes peer out from beneath an overlong fringe.

Jennifer, please put down your phone, these conversations are important.”

Yes yes yes, I know. These sessions cost money, these sessions are important, you can’t help me if I don’t help myself blah blah blah.” Jennifer carelessly tosses her phone onto the table in front of her.

Do you play? in your regular daily life do you play?

Of course, you know I do, that’s why I’m here, because of my ‘playing’, right?

The doctor stares out the window and hesitates before responding, “Is that how you define playing?” she gestures at the scene beyond the glass.

Jennifer follows the doctors gaze toward the window, standing she walks across the room and places her left hand on the glass. It shimmers and darkens, the air in the room seems to thicken, there is a faint smell of smoke and a sudden warmth. The doctor feels her heartbeat slow down, slower, slower.

Jennifer, Jennifer stop, please, come and sit down.” She gasps, struggling to form the words as her breath grows more and more shallow.

Oh doc, you’re fine, just take a deep breath,” Jennifer laughs and turns to face the doctor, “I wouldn’t hurt you.

The doctor feels her heartbeat return to normal and her breathing becomes easier. She reaches for a tissue from the box on the table and dabs at the tear forming in the corner of her eye. The smell of smoke and the heat dissipate, and the window glass becomes clear again.

Taking a deep breath she asks the next question “What about them Jennifer? What about all of them, did you mean to hurt them with your game?

Jennifer stares at the doctor, those big brown eyes narrow and she slowly ruffles her fringe. Turning back to the window Jennifer looks out at the remnants of smoke hanging in the air and the street of burned buildings and vehicles.

She laughs again, “fuck em if they can’t take a joke.

There are lots of opportunities to incorporate play into life, regardless of how you define it. To me this is play, playing with words and random ideas that pop into my head, sometimes because of a ‘prompt’. Playing with the prompt.

Oh yeah and I’ll play golf, play poker, play in the garden, play with the dog, play with my closet and all the cupboards, play with crystals, play on the beach, play in the snow, play in the sun….
