Just because you can’t see it….

On Sunday I visited a ‘pop-up’ bead store, there were excellent discounts advertised and as you know I’ve got a little fondness for sparkly stuff.

Driving home I kept thinking that I hadn’t been charged properly. I was right, all the cute  accessories had been charged as single items instead of 6 x 1, 2 x 1, etc…the difference was $9.68. I emailed the owner, explaining and asking how to pay her. She was lovely, thanked me for being so honest and said to pay next time.

Although it was an email exchange, which makes it hard to read emotions, I got the feeling she was surprised by my honesty, but it hadn’t even crossed my mind not to tell her…it would have been stealing.

Then I started thinking about honesty and how it’s interpreted. The line between honesty/truth, dishonesty and kindness. When is it better to be “dishonest”, and choose kindness?

When someone asks “do these pants make my bum look big”, you might be honest in replying “it’s not the pants”, but how about being kind and saying “you’re beautiful” wouldn’t that also be the truth?

The impact of living honestly may not always be visible but it’s there. Choose wisely.

    1. I agree, it’s saddening that there are people who would just shrug it off and say whatever, not my mistake. Meanwhile there is a small business person trying to make a go of it. I’m glad you liked the post, thank you.

  1. I like this post – a lot. You are a lovely, and honest, person.

I think the majority of people would not have called in an attempt to pay back the oversight. However, if it was the other way around and the owner accidentally overcharged, I think the majority would call to get a refund.

And for sure, the next time I see you I am going to ask how my bum looks in my pants!

  2. Honestly is a scarce commodity, so I’m not surprised that she was shocked.
I have ZERO idea how expensive these things should be, but it seems to me that the prices are a bit inflated. Almost $3 for a single piece?
