Lydia looked around the small bathroom and grimaced, the entire place was speckled with drips and drops of glistening red. “This is bad” she muttered to herself, leaning over the sink and staring at a particularly large glob that was slowly descending down the mirror.
“There’s nothing out here, all clean.” Her partner Andrew stuck his head through the door and gasped, “Holy doodle, what a mess!” Stepping into the room he pushed aside the shower curtain, sparkling white tiles and chrome fixtures caused him to release a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding, “ha…wasn’t sure what might’ve ….,” a small embarrassed smile.
“So what do you think happened? The perp was able to stop themselves and that’s why there’s no mess in the other rooms?” He ignored the small shriek from the hallway and looked again at the floor and the walls. Glancing up he turned to Lydia “Is it on the ceiling? How did it get on the ceiling?”
She shrugged and pushed her hand through her hair, gathering the shoulder length strands into a ponytail and then letting it fall again. “Who knows. The only thing I do know, and I know for sure, is that there was more than one person involved, and they are both going to pay for this.” She then stuck her finger in the glob on the mirror and drew a heart.
Making eye contract with Andrew she very slightly inclined her head toward the door and raised her voice, “This type of crime can not go unpunished, it’s reprehensible!” knowing that the word reprehensible wouldn’t be understood by the perpetrators and using it anyway.
Gritting his teeth Andrew responded equally as loud, “I agree, there will be consequences!” knowing that the ears in the hallway understood the word consequences, they had heard it often enough.
“Um guys, I can’t hold them for much longer, are you almost finished?” Anna called from the hallway. Sounds of scuffling and a cry from Anna, “One of them tried to bite me! Get out here, I need backup!” caused Lydia and Andrew to stifle smiles and step out of the bathroom.
Anna struggled to hold on to each of the culprits knowing that if they got free they would be gone in the blink of an eye. How two such diminutive creatures could be so strong and move so quickly was beyond her.
“Anna, step behind them and push them forward as you let go, Andrew get ready.” Lydia instructed as she and Andrew braced themselves for the onslaught. The small bodies launched themselves forward, outstretched hands and nails covered in small patches of red.
Andrew and Lydia each caught a body and lifted them off the ground, “Daddy I did manicure!” one of them announced proudly, tightly gripping an open bottle of “Passion Red” nail polish.
“I’m really sorry guys, I put them down for a nap after lunch and..I should have known, they were too quiet too quickly.” Anna picked up her backpack from the dining table, “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, okay?” she called as the door slammed behind her.
“Okay double trouble, let’s get you cleaned up.” Andrew hoisted a twin over his shoulder.
“You know, I could clean up these two if you did the bathroom.” said Lydia hopefully.
“Concetents” muttered a small sleepy voice.
“You said it wrong, it’s concequenz” came the equally sleepy response, “right Daddy?”
The End
